The Division of Human Genetics at UCT invites applications from suitably qualified and HPCSA registered / register-able Genetic Counsellors for a full time position as a Lecturer for 24 months. Human Genetics is a cutting-edge academic and clinical discipline, where an emphasis is placed on translating research findings to both the teaching environment and its utility in the clinic.Genetic Counselling and the training of Genetic Counsellors is therefore envisaged to play a significant role underpinning the utilization of genetics in service delivery in a wide range of clinical disciplines.
Minimum requirements at Lecturer level:
·At least a Master’s degree in Genetic Counselling.
·At least three years post-Masters’ clinical experience.
·Current HPCSA registration or register-able with the HPSCA.
·Experience in teaching/tutoring at a tertiary institution.
·Current research activity as evidenced by quality publication/s in peer-reviewed journals.
·PhD in a relevant field.
·Coordinating the MSc in Genetic Counselling (GC) Programme and of GC-related semester courses (mixed media/distance learning) including recruitment and selection of students. Coordinating and contributing to teaching for the coursework component of these programmes including clinical teaching and supervision.
·Participation in national « outreach » programmes to provide and disseminate equitable genetic counselling services to previously disadvantaged communities. Supervision of literature reviews, data collection, analysis and write-up of minor dissertations and publications for MSc in genetic counselling students.
·Appropriate supervision of other postgraduate students and GC Interns in the Division of Human Genetics
·Lectures to undergraduate and post graduate students in the Faculty of Health Sciences and other medical professionals, in line with institutional and national professional body requirements.
·Lectures and support to the lay public and patient support groups.
·Participation in ongoing research conducted by the Division.
·Developing funding proposals for future research grants.
·Strengthening relationships with local and international academic partners.
The annual remuneration for 2014 is between R253 552 and R484 656, dependent on qualifications and experience.
